Rob brings 40 years of Wall Street and institutional investment expertise to Saul Wealth Advisors, where he serves as Senior Investment Director responsible for day-to-day portfolio management, portfolio construction, investment due diligence, and asset management services. His deep institutional background enables him to apply pension and endowment fund-style investing discipline to entrepreneurial and virtual family office clients.
For the past 27 years, Rob served as Director of Mortgage-Backed Securities Strategies at APG Asset Management, the asset management arm of Europe's largest pension fund, where he managed approximately $12 billion in US fixed income assets. Rob's 27-year career managing billions in assets at APG reflects both his portfolio management expertise and the trust placed in him by one of Europe's largest institutional investors. He was part of the original team that developed and built the initial infrastructure at APG Asset Management when the US office began internally investing in 1999. Rob served as a member of both the Fixed Income Strategy Group, which determined optimal asset allocations within the US Fixed Income Fund, and the Relative Value Group, which managed overall risk for funds in both the US and Europe.
Rob's technical expertise extends to comprehensive retirement plan design and investment oversight. As chairman of APG's $140 million 401(k) plan, he was mandated with overseeing the efficacy and performance of all internal investments within the plan. Rob spearheaded the program, interviewing platform providers, and after selecting Fidelity Investments, worked closely with their representatives to establish the initial suite of investment choices. He developed internal policies for monitoring in-plan investments and reviewed fund investment performance on an ongoing basis to ensure best-in-class options for all US employees. Given the success of the 401(k) plan, Rob was asked to join the internal Private Equity investment committee, which oversaw a separate pool of executive deferred compensation and implemented similar investment monitoring procedures.
Rob has managed and leads his own family office's investments, which involves asset allocation, security selection, tax loss harvesting, tax mitigation strategies, trusts and estates insight, and insurance strategies. This hands-on experience complements his institutional discipline, enabling him to bring endowment-style portfolio construction and risk management to the families he serves.
Rob started his career on Wall Street in 1984. From 1984 through 1997, Rob worked on the sell-side in a variety of fixed income research roles at Kidder, Peabody & Co., Lehman Brothers, and Merrill Lynch. In 1997, Rob joined UBS Asset Management and began the second phase of his career in money management. In 1999, Rob joined APG Asset Management.
Rob lives on the north shore of Long Island with his wife of 39 years. He's the proud father of three daughters, and perhaps the only thing he enjoys more than investing and helping people reach their financial goals are his two grandchildren, Jax and Josie. When not working with clients, Rob enjoys golf, traveling, and reading. He earned his BA from SUNY Binghamton and his MBA from Fordham University.
